Personal History Gladys was born December 31, 2381 in Spain.. She was the last of quintuplets and the only girl. Her parents owned a Spanish Colonial Mansion that had been passed down through generations on her fathers side.

Gladys' father worked in San Francisco, California as a technology specialist for Starfleet while her mother was a stay at home mom. They had a live-in nanny when the children were younger to help her mother with caring for them. Gladys' father was transported back and forth for work each day.

For as long as she could remember, Gladys' brothers called her ‘Runt’ which she hated. It was born from being the smallest of the five of them. All four boys were tall and well built while she was short and skinny.

Then being talk and well built to her being short and skinny. Gladys had a great childhood. Beyond that her brothers liked to tease her; they were all very close. Gladys has fond memories of growing up with her brothers.

Gladys did well in school. She took great pride in making certain she did well. Gladys couldn’t accept failure in anything she did. Her mother tried to teach her to cook but that was a failure. Gladys claimed she couldn’t boil water. The one thing she did excel at was making pottery. It was a craft that had been passed down in Spain for generations and Gladys was good at it. Most people just replicated what they needed but she loved the feel of the clay and molding her own. Even though there was no market for it Gladys was determined. Her parents allowed her to chase her dream, she was ten a lot would change.

When Gladys was thirteen, she got the rare opportunity to go to San Francisco with her parents. Her father was found to work and her mother wanted to spend the day shopping. Gladys' brothers had gone off with their uncle to help on his farm.

It was Gladys first trip to San Francisco and she loved it. Not so much the shopping as she wasn’t really fond of it but the people and the food captivated her. She tried foods she hadn’t eaten before, saw the Golden Gate Bridge and at the end of the day they went and watched the fighters take off and land while waiting for her father to get out of work.

Gladys couldn’t take her eyes off them. She was fascinated and didn’t want to go home when her father came to get them. This was a pivotal moment in Gladys life. She started to look up fighters and pilots on their computers at school. Whenever her mother went to California she would beg to go just so she could see them. Her brothers teased her and told her she didn’t have what it took to be a pilot. Gladys had a burning need to prove them wrong.

Gladys worked hard at school to keep her grades up and geared her classes towards subjects that would help her get there. She was driven to succeed at this even though it felt like no one believed in her. Gladys started dating Evan O’Toole while a sophomore in high school. She really liked him and an added bonus was his mother had a plane and flew it for pleasure. When Evan found out she wanted to be a pilot, he got his Mom to take them up. Soon, Gladys started flying with Evan’s mom. She started to learn to fly, as both Evan and his Mom wanted to help her achieve her dreams.

As Gladys started spending more and more time with Evans mother and less with him. Evan was frustrated that his mother was in between them. He finally told Gladys how he felt and she told him that flying was important to her. It was then they realized that the romance was over. They agreed to remain friends. Gladys continued to take flight lessons from his mother and when she was a senior in high school she got her license.

After graduating from high school, Gladys left home, transporting to San Francisco with her Dad. He supported her choice and encouraged her. From there she got a ride to Betazed to start her training.

STARFLEET ACADEMY-BETAZED

Gladys arrived on Betazed in 2399. She had checked all of the academy’s and found this one was to her liking. She was nervous but she shoved it away, determined to push herself to be the top pilot in her class. Anything less was a failure, something she would have a hard time accepting.

Gladys found her time in the simulator frustrating at first. She had thought flying a plane would give her an advantage but it wasn’t the same as flying for Starfleet and she almost felt like it was a disadvantage. Gladys used will and determination to learn what she needed to show she had the skills they required.

Gladys focused solely on graduating with high honors. She heard others talking about their options, becoming a department head, eventually taking command classes and moving away from being a pilot. At this point, she had one desire and that was to be a Starfleet pilot.

Gladys met Noah Larsen while she was having a particularly bad day and she was dressing herself down loudly. Gladys remembered seeing him in class before. She thought he was a bit arrogant and came across like a bad boy. That was part of what attracted her to him. Gladys was also a bit jealous at how flying seemed to come natural to him. She liked watching him and wished she had that ability. She wondered if maybe he could give her some pointers. P

She had looked over to see he witnessed her meltdown and saw he had an amused look on his face which only irritated her. As a sort of apology, he took her out for lunch and she found herself falling for him. The only thing was she thought he told jokes that weren’t funny or maybe they were and she just didn’t have the right sense of humor. It also could be that she had a hard time focusing if it wasn’t on her classes.

Gladys really liked Noah but she wasn’t letting anything or anyone come between her and her goals. She knew it was wrong but she broke dates with him when she could get extra flight time in. She really thought if he cared about her he would understand but instead he seemed to be upset. Noah seemed a little immature and didn’t take their classes seriously enough. It annoyed her how he didn’t study as much as she did nor did he take any extra time in the simulator. She felt like he was a bit lazy.

Gladys liked hanging out with the other pilots because she picked up tips on their experiences and they seemed to have the same dedication. At this point in her life it was all about the win, about being the best. If she had thought about it she would have realized I'd really cared that much about him. Gladys felt things swirling out of control the more she was with Noah. She felt she was losing herself to his world. She was very competitive and there was no way she was going to let Noah beat her out of winning the top seat. She had to win it and she was starting to feel like Noah might be in her way.

Gladys had concerns when Noah started taking therapy. She felt like his getting help was a sign of weakness. Pilots had to be level headed and be free of stress, yet here he was seeing someone. Gladys was concerned about him and those he may serve with.

He wasn’t open with her about it and she couldn’t help but believe that she was part of the reason. It didn’t come as a huge surprise to her when Noah broke things off. She didn’t believe his reason that she didn’t laugh at his jokes. Gladys knew that she would probably never know the true reason. It hurt more than she thought it would. Gladys did what she always did when emotions got in the way. She buried herself in her training. It was her senior year and everyone wanted to be in that top spot.

Gladys' instructor encouraged her to relax, that she pushed herself too hard. Gladys explained she wanted to succeed and her instructor informed her that headhad turned and she had impressed people. But he warned her that the obsession was a concern. Gladys took his words to heart and forced herself to find some time to relax.

Gladys graduated in the top five of her class in 2403.. At first she was angry with herself but when their speaker spoke about all they had achieved and what they had done to her there she realized that she needed to be proud of herself. She had been happy that two of her brothers made it to see her graduate.

USS SPARTACUS

Gladys was assigned to the USS Spartacus in 2403 when she graduated from the academy on Betazed. She was excited to board and join with the other fighter pilots in her wing. She thought they would be like family , bonded together. Instead she didn’t seem to fit in . Brett, her front seater, seemed to have made it his mission to get to her.

Gladys tried ignoring him but it was difficult when he threw sarcastic comments at her, said she was a substandard pilot, and found anything he could say or do to try and intimidate them. One particular night of listening to him belittle her and her squadron commander do nothing she had had enough and got in his face. Gladys was a damn good pilot and she told him so. Her commander ordered her to leave the area, and she was grounded for the night.

Gladys was feeling many emotions. For the first time she felt lonely. She had no close friends, no one to talk to or even get advice from. She didn't want to see the other pilots right now so she headed to the mess hall and for a bowl of Double Chocolate ice cream with almonds in it. When she was growing up it was her go to when she was upset.

She started eating her ice cream when she heard a noise and looked up. Her first thought was she hoped the man in front of her wasn’t married. She had felt an instant attraction to him. He asked to join her and she waved to a chair but warned him she wasn’t good company. He had said he would take his chances.

At first he just sat there and then he introduced himself as Oscar Rodriguez. She returned the favor by telling him her name. Gladys couldn’t remember for the life of her how it happened but before she knew it she was telling him her sad tale of woe. He wasn’t judgemental at all. Oscar changed the subject and soon he had her laughing. She forgot all about her troubles. They sat and talked until it was time for her to turn in. They made plans to meet up for lunch the next day.

Gladys was grateful for Oscar’s friendship. She felt guilty dumping her problems on him but he seemed to care and listened to the problems she was having. Her constant attacks and how she felt like it wasn’t deserved. She wondered if maybe it was that they knew Gladys was the best pilot and were intimidated by her.

Gladys was stunned that the other pilots and her commander embraced Oscar. They acted like he was a part of their family and yet she was still the outsider. Gladys couldn’t understand what it was about her. Perhaps this wasn’t the best fit for her? She seriously contemplated a transfer but it would feel like a failure on her part and one thing Gladys wasn’t was a quitter.

She met up with Oscar for dinner and to her surprise he told her he felt she should apologize. Gladys was stunned, it felt like a betrayal, he was supposed to be her friend. When he quickly changed the subject she let it go, but she felt hurt. Gladys spent a little more time with him and then feigned a headache and headed off to think about what he had said.

Gladys mulled over what he said for several days. She didn’t want to apologize because he suggested it but because she meant it. Otherwise it would be meaningless. Gladys sat down and really went over her time here and came to the conclusion that an apology was due. As hard as it was, she went and apologized.

Gladys didn’t know why but at first she didn’t tell Oscar she had apologized. One night while they were eating dinner she casually mentioned that she had followed his advice. Gladys felt like Oscar had just now let down his guard and they seemed to becoming closer. A few days later he asked her out and she said yes. When she mentioned it to her crew they teased her that it took them long enough to get together. She felt for the first time that she might become one of them.

Gladys had never dated a guy like him. He understood her career and didn’t seem threatened by it. Oscar also didn’t hide how he felt about things. They connected on a level she didn’t think she was capable of. Gladys was in love with him and it scared her. This was the first time since she had decided to be a fighter pilot that something came before it, or rather someone. It wasn’t long and Oscar asked her to marry him. When she called her parents to share the news she was so touched that Oscar had callled and spoke with her father.

They stayed up late that night talking and Oscar mentioned the possibility of having children and something stirred inside Gladys. The thought of holding a baby that looked like Oscar warmed her heart. She realized she wanted it all. The only problem was her career as a fighter pilot wasn’t conducive to raising children.

Gladys shared her concerns with Oscar. She appreciated how he didn’t tell her what she should do, just offered advice. Gladys weighed her options and together they agreed that she was going to request a transfer to Flight Control. She would still be a pilot but it would be a better schedule and she felt she could be more of a part of their children’s lives. Gladys turned in her transfer the next day. Afterwards, she went to get her physical out of the way and was shocked to discover she was pregnant. According to her calculations, somewhere around two months.

Seven months later, Gladys gave birth to a boy. They named him Oscar Alvarez Rodriguez. Gladys thought he was perfect. He had Oscar’s eyes and a head full of hair.
