History
-----------------------------------------------------------

Riley, as the oldest child from a Starfleet family, had always felt the absence of her father. He had left before she was born, choosing to join the Dominion War instead of retiring and starting a family. Her mother, determined and resilient, had raised her and her younger sister on her own.
Riley’s mother was a professor at Starfleet Academy and very devoted to her position. She would often leave early in the morning and leave Riley to watch Delilah as well as cook and clean the house. Riley was taught at a young age that their home was like a tight ship. Her mother hated anything out of place. This responsibility over Delilah caused resentment between the sisters.

Throughout the years, Riley would occasionally bump into her father during family events, accompanied by her sister and mother. They maintained a polite and civil demeanor, avoiding causing a scene, but deep down, it saddened Riley to witness this once-loving relationship deteriorate into mere acquaintance.

While her friends had fathers who played an active role in their lives, Riley yearned for the father she never truly knew. She wondered at times what it would be like to not have these responsibilities, instead to go to the movies with friends or have a sleepover.

During the Dominion War, while the rest of her family worried about her father's safety, Riley found herself conflicted. She couldn't gather the same feeling of concern or relief. It was an odd mix of emotions she couldn't fully understand.

As Riley grew older, she became independent and strong-willed. Determined to forge her own path, she set ambitious goals for herself. Upon graduating from high school, she wasted no time and immediately enrolled in the Yeoman program with Starfleet.

ACADEMY YEARS:

Her years in Starfleet, from 2389 to 2393, were both exhilarating and challenging. The first year was dedicated to basic training, an essential requirement for becoming a Yeoman. She signed up for all the required classes to be a Yeoman and electives as well. Riley took classes in command as well, wanting to have a diverse education and to be able to better understand the command officers she would serve under.
Opting to live with a roommate instead of staying at home, Riley faced her mother's disappointment head-on. She knew she needed to focus on her own growth and development.

While her classes fascinated her, Riley encountered unexpected hurdles in her personal life. Her roommate, Felicia DeVille, with unyielding determination, took it upon herself to find Riley a boyfriend. Parties and study sessions turned into introductions, but Riley politely declined their advances, explaining that she wasn't interested.

Riley could tell her roommate didn’t take her studies as seriously. Though she didn’t want to date anyone she relented and went on several dates with Dale Moreno. He was nice and polite enough and came across as a serious student like she was.

Then, one night he got a little too hands on with Riley. She wasn’t a prude but she had goals and expectations and one of them was she would not sleep around like most girls did. Riley told him she didn’t want to see him again.

Later, she told Felicia to not set her up on dates anymore. Felicia was upset at first but finally understood this wasn’t what Riley wanted and the girls settled into a friendship of sorts.

Riley was every teacher’s favorite student. The one who always had her homework done, did the extra credit and raised her hand when questions were asked. She wanted to impress her professors and end up high in her class.
By her last year at the academy she was tutoring cadets from the lower classes in her free time. Living close to home, Riley went home on Sundays for family dinner, which usually ended up with her mother complaining about Delilah not being neat and orderly like Riley. That ensued Riley and Delilah getting into a disagreement there Delilah would leave. Riley wished that she and her sister could have a better relationship but she knew Delilah resented the years that their mother left Riley to parent her.

After successfully completing her basic training, Riley moved on to the Administrative School. She immersed herself in her studies, giving her all and graduating at the top of her class. Seeing her mother's proud face at the ceremony meant the world to her but she was saddened that Delilah came to the ceremony and then left without speaking to her.
USS LOVEJOY

In 2392, Riley was assigned to serve as a Yeoman on the USS Lovejoy for Captain Jacobs. He was a like soul, who required order and tidiness. Riley always arrived before him and stayed until he left for the day. She did the tasks he assigned and when he wanted something her neat and orderly system had it in a matter of minutes. Riley had always hated her mothers tight ship home where everything had a place but now she was grateful. Those lessons as a child had set her course for this position.

In 2393, Captain Jacobs was promoted and the first officer became the captain. Working for Captain Martinez was a different world. Where Jacobs had been strict, Martinez would send her home when he had a late night in his ready room. He often commented that she didn’t have to come in so early and was adamant that he get his own coffee. Riley was a bit a a loss, at times wondering why his expectations were lower than the previous captain. She still maintained her high degree of efficiency but with time formed a working friendship with Captain Martinez. Riley had a great deal of respect for him and how he treated his crew.

Riley had never looked beyond her position as Yeoman until Captain Martinez started encouraging her to reach for higher goals. She was shocked when he told her he thought she could be command material one day. Riley had never in her wildest dreams thought that there was a possibility there. It was something to give some strong thought to.

One thing Riley wished was that she wasn’t so uptight and rigid but she didn’t know how to be any other way. It was who she was. Often, she would eat in the mess hall and observe other crew members as they visited and spent time together. One person in particular was Jonathan O’Bryant. Riley had a crush on him and secretly wished for the courage to ask him out. The problem was he was everything she wasn’t. Relaxed, a person who knew how to have a good time and was comfortable with who he was. She also knew he was going places. It was watching him that gave her incentive to pursue something more than being a Yeoman. It was then Riley started assisting in Diplomacy.

In 2494, as fate would have it, Riley was sitting at a table eating her dinner when a shadow crossed in front of her. She looked up and her eyes widened as Jonathan O’Bryant stood there.

Riley couldn’t believe it when he asked her out. She sat there for a moment and then shyly said yes. The past year she had gotten to know him a little bit when he came to see the captain or at a meeting. It only made her like him more. He seemed like a really nice guy, she wondered why he would want to date her. She was his exact opposite.

Riley hadn’t dated much and was nervous on their first few dates. She didn’t know how to relax and just have a good time. She feared he would grow tired of her.
When Jonathan suggested they have a few drinks together, she hesitated but finally said yes. On their fourth date, they were on shore leave at Risa.

Riley decided she was just going to enjoy the evening, have a few drinks and let herself relax. Those fruity drinks were so good but they packed quite a punch. Both her and Jonathan drank too much and the feeling they had mixed with the alcohol in their systems they ended up eloping.

Riley and Jonathan decided to wait to divorce, give it a few weeks so questions wouldn’t be asked. Before they could get a divorce, Riley discovered she was pregnant. Both her and Jonathan didn’t want to divorce. They wanted their child to have both parents and they both felt a chemistry they wanted to explore. Riley in a sense felt guilty over how their child had been consummated but she, along with Jonathan wanted to have a happy home to raise their child in and resolved to make the best of things, and stay together.

During this time, Riley got a surprise call from her sister Delilah. It seemed that when Riley told her mother about her marriage and that they were having a baby, she had called Delilah to straighten Riley out. Instead, Riley stood by her resolve. She had fallen in love with Jonathan and she knew it sounded impetuous, she had learned that their decision, though quick and without great thought, had been the best thing for her and Jonathan.

She refused to let anyone pass judgment on them. Riley did feel badly where her sister was concerned. She had always warned Delilah that her way of living in the moment would come back to haunt her.

Things were not perfect as they started their life together. There was a period of adjustment where Riley, over time, learned to relax and that the universe would not end if a piece of clothing laid on the floor or a book was left on a counter. She came a long way from who she used to be.

Riley was so grateful for Jonathan through her pregnancy. He would hold her when she cried for no reason, assure her she was going to be a good mother when she doubted herself. Whatever she was going through he was her support system.
In 2395, Riley gave birth to Miles. She would never forget the look on Jonathan’s face when he first held their son and cut the umbilical cord. Miles looked so much like Jonathan, Riley thought he was the most perfect baby ever born. She was looking forward to their lives together.

In 2397, Jonathan was given an opportunity to serve as second officer on the USS Shran. For a few months, Riley had been toying with the idea of transferring over to the diplomatic department on the USS Lovejoy. As luck would have it, she was offered the position as assistant chief at the same time Jonathan was offered his promotion.

Riley could see the indecision on Jonathan’s face and for a few minutes she felt the same. They both knew what it felt like to have an absent father. Riley didn’t want the same for Miles and neither did Jonathan. First, Jonathan was going to turn down his promotion, then Riley was going to turn down hers. They finally agreed to a one year separation to further their careers and then they would find a way to serve together.

As the weeks went by, Riley had a lot of difficulty adjusting to life without Jonathan. Her love for him was deep and she missed him on an intimate level as well as the one person she could talk to about anything. She looked forward to his calls and so did Miles. His face would light up when he saw his Daddy. Their bond was strong and proven by how much they spoke with each other. And then the unthinkable happened. Riley discovered she was pregnant.

She knew that Jonathan was already missing Miles and contacted Jonathan right away. They discussed ways to be together but eventually decided to wait for something to open so they could be together once more.

Riley’s diplomatic skills were tested in a particular mission where the crew of the Lovejoy and a Cardassian ship had a clash. Riley knew it was a matter of the Cardassians wanting to pick a fight for some reason. She negotiated a compromise and both ships' crew felt like they had won. It had made her feel good to know that she had made the right decision when she had left being a Yeoman and moved over to diplomacy.

Riley had always thought of herself as a mature woman with everything together. She had learned to relax in many ways but nothing had tested her like being a single parent as well as working. She found that the little things didn’t bother her anymore, like a book left on the counter or the toothpaste on the counter. Riley was more concerned with her family and spending time with their son and herself as she went through this pregnancy. She also joined a book club and made some friends within it. It helped to keep her from being so lonely for Jonathan.

As 2397 came to a close, Riley was excited to join Jonathan on the USS Shran. She knew that Jonathan was excited to see her and their son. As well as that two days after she arrived there, Little Ellison came into the world. Riley could tell just by looking at Jonathan that it meant everything that their daughter had waited to enter the world until they were together. It had only been a year but Riley vowed this wouldn’t happen again. They would find a way to make their careers mesh. Miles needed them both in his life.

In 2398, Riley accepted a position as Chief Diplomatic Officer on the USS Shran. As luck would have it, he had taken a promotion to another ship. Riley was so excited. When they came aboard the USS Shran, the last year melted away as they had a joyous reunion. Riley would never forget Miles reaching out for his father and he held on like he would never let go.

Riley jumped into her position and worked hard to succeed. She no longer would settle for the position in front of her, she had designs to eventually command her own ship. When she told Jonathan of her aspirations he encouraged her to not give up. Riley knew he was as proud of her as she was of him.

In turn, Riley pushed Jonathan to go for what he wanted, telling him that they would figure out the future as they went. She saw the surprise on his face and she knew that she had finally let go of all the planning and scheduling. The important thing was they were together.

In 2399, Riley became pregnant with their third child. As she went through her pregnancy, she had moments where she questioned whether it was fair to reach for a command while raising two children. At one point, she felt like she was like her father who had deserted them for a career. When she mentioned it to Jonathan, he was passionate about how she couldn’t compare them. They had their family with them no matter what.

Riley gave birth to Kaitlyn with Jonathan there, coaching her all the way. She took one look at their tiny baby girl with a head full of red hair and was instantly in love with her. Riley felt so blessed and knew that they had a bright future ahead of them.
With a tiny baby, Riley decided to take some time off in 2400 to care for their new daughter. Though she loved being with Kaitlyn and knew that she couldn’t replace these special days, she missed the excitement and fulfillment that being Chief Diplomatic Officer entailed. Yet, her position on the USS Shran had been filled, Jonathan was seeking a command and Riley was determined to keep her family together. She didn’t know how but Riley knew there had to be a way.

The solution, as it turned out, came in the way of Commodore Domingo Martinez. He contacted them both and offered them positions on his starbase. They looked at each other and without much discussion, accepted the positions. Riley would be a second officer on the support vessel while Jonathan was given executive officer on a different support ship. Riley was so proud of her husband and also relieved that they had found a way to stay together.

It wasn’t long after they moved to their new positions that Commodore Martinez discovered the Romulans treachery, in the synthetic war. They had pushed the Federation towards being passive. Riley and her husband were so disappointed in the Federation. This was not what they had signed up for and it left them somewhat disillusioned. It was Commodore Martinez who gave them their faith back by pushing and succeeding in forming the Eighth Fleet. It was no surprise to them that he was appointed as Wing Division Director of Eighth Fleet.

In 2401, Riley was thrilled to be offered the first officer position on the USS Livingston. The former executive officer had taken a promotion and her captain had been impressed with her abilities and had recommended her for the position.

This was a tough time for Jonathan and Riley felt for him, trying to support him as best she could. Jonathan had been on the track for command before she had even considered it but she had been promoted to first officer before him. Riley knew he didn’t blame her nor was he jealous, he was just questioning himself and fairly wondered why she had promoted and he had not.

Despite those feelings of doubt, Riley and Jonathan supported each other wholly and were there for each other. Balancing being a parent as well as first officer was a learning curve for Riley and at times she questioned herself. Jonathan would immediately jump in and give her a pep talk. They were truly there for each other and equal partners, both wanting the other to succeed.

Riley respected her captain greatly. He was totally on board with working to repair the reputation under the guidance of Commodore Martinez as were Riley and Jonathan. Over time, they managed to change their fleet outlook and got back to exploration which was what they had all come out here for. Riley felt like she had come full circle and was serving under the core beliefs she had had when she first joined and Jonathan felt the same.

2402 would be one of those years that Riley held in her heart as the best of them. Jonathan was able to spend time on the Livingston with her and their children. The children wouldn’t always stay with Riley. It was a shared experience as at times, they would go with their father. Riley wanted them to spend time with both of them.

Over the next couple years, Riley and Jonathan worked hard to prove their worth as first officers. No one had been prouder than she was when her husband had been promoted. Jonathan was going to be an exceptional captain and she anxiously waited for the day he was given that promotion.

Excitement was growing as Riley’s captain approached her with an offer to attend the Command Academy on Planet Rosa, which was near Port Royale Station and the Fleet Yards. She wasn’t surprised to learn that Jonathan had been given the same opportunity. It was one of those impetuous moments for Riley where she told Jonathan they needed to go for it and he agreed with her.

Riley knew this was because of their dedication and hard work. They had taken the time to learn their positions and fill them exceptionally. Both of them had their leadership abilities tested and they had proven their worth. Their command officers would never had recommended them if they had not done the work. Riley was proud of Jonathan and herself.

In 2404, Riley was excited as they packed their family up and headed to Planet Rosa. She couldn’t help but look to their future, as they both served as captains. Riley and Jonathan knew it wouldn’t be easy to juggle command training and three young children but they would do it. They had the determination and drive to pursue positions as captains.

In doing so, they would be able to make a difference in the Federation as they set forth to serve on ships of their own.
As they started their training on Planet Rosa, Riley couldn’t help but wonder what faced them in the years ahead. If she only knew they were going to serve as an important part of the Federation, each leaving their own mark as they served the Federation. The universe was theirs for the taking.

In 2405, Riley stood beside her husband as they graduated from the Command Academy. She looked out and saw her mother and sister, along with Jonathan’s family in attendance. Their children sat with Jonathan’s parents, Kaitlyn on her grandmother’s lap while Miles sat in his chair, he was already so grown up at ten years old.

Immediately following her graduation, Riley was given an assignment as Captain of the USS Atlantia while Jonathan was assigned the Captain of the USS Hornet. They would be serving out of Valhalla Fleet Yards. Riley smiled at her husband and whispered that she knew things would work out. They had their whole future ahead of them as they headed out to start new adventures.
