Personal History Roger McClain was born in Santa Cruz, California. He is the oldest of two, having a sister one year younger than him. Her parents decided to stop at two as their mother wanted to go back to work when their children were old enough for her to be gone from home.

Roger was born on February 13, 2371. His father worked at the Starfleet Corps of Engineers as a Starship Design Specialist while his mother worked on Mare Island at the Star Fleet Mare Island ship yards. It could be said they were an engineering family as his Uncle Frank was an engineer serving in Starfleet. He was killed during the Dominion War while on board the USS Majestic. Roger was just two years old at the time of his death.

His parents were both upset and angry not understanding why this happened to Frank. It would have been easy to blame Starfleet and anyone else they could think of but the truth was that Frank died doing what he loved. Frank gave up his position working at the fleet yards to be on a starship and make a difference. They had been told when a fleet officer came to pay their respects that Frank stayed aboard keeping the ship running until they could get as many as they could on pods and off the ship.

Roger had a good childhood. His mother was home with him and his sister until he was four. His parents hired a caregiver to take care of them, get them to school, until Roger was twelve years old. Then, with a neighbor watching out for them, Roger was responsible for his younger sister, Jessica.

Roger always knew he was going to be an engineer. He didn’t want to serve like his parents on Earth. He wanted to explore. His parents weren’t thrilled with the idea but they believed he needed to make his own choice in life just like Frank had.

When Roger was fourteen he discovered surfing and found he loved it. Most days in the summer he could be found on the beach, with his friend Pedro Lopez, waiting for the best wave to come. It was a feeling of euphoria for him when he was at the top of the wave just gliding to the beach.

The first day of high school Roger met with his counselor and set a course for his high school courses to start him on the road to engineering. He wasn’t much of a sports fan and didn’t participate on any teams. Instead, he joined a robotics club and a programming club. Both were extracurricular activities to help when he applied to Starfleet.

Roger didn’t date much. He wasn’t into school dances nor gossiping and keeping up on what others were doing. Mostly he hung out with Padro when he had free time.

Roger graduated from high school and two days later received his acceptance letter to Starfleet Academy. It was a mixture of feelings for him. Padro hadn’t been accepted this time around and it had been their dream to go together. Roger encouraged him by telling him to not give up, he would make it next time and he would still be there.

STARFLEET ACADEMY-BETAZED

Roger purposely chose to attend the academy off planet Betazed in 2390. He loved his parents but he knew they would try and talk him into using a transporter to go back and forth to the academy and influence his decisions for his future. Roger knew what he wanted to do.

Roger found his classes to be hard but he loved the challenge and didn’t mind doing the work. His father always said anything worth having was worth working for. He did wish that Padro was there, he had a couple from his class he had gone out with a few times but they partied hard and Roger wanted to stay focused. Both his parents had warned him only the strong minded cadets made it to graduation.

Roger believed that there were no coincidences. Things happened for a reason. It was raining hard and he had rushed to grab a shuttle taxi to get back to his place and collided with another student who was trying to get the shuttle as well. They decided to share the shuttle and a friendship emerged between Roger and Regina McArthur. She quickly told him she preferred Gina.

They started talking on their way home and ended up at a cafe and talked for hours. Roger became fast friends with Gina. Other cadets were always mistaking them for a couple they were so close to. Roger wished it could be but he knew that Gina didn’t feel that way about him. He also told himself that right now she needed a friend more than a boyfriend. It was a complication she didn’t need.

Their friendship continued throughout their junior year. Roger had to hold himself back from asking her out on a date and it was getting harder and harder to keep his feelings hidden.

At the beginning of their senior year, Roger couldn’t hold his feelings back anymore. They were eating lunch and he told her he had feelings for her and he wanted to know if she felt the same. Gina looked shell shocked. She told him that she cared about him but not in that way. They were good friends and that was all it would ever be. Gina felt bad and started to leave but Roger stopped her and told her he didn’t want to lose her friendship. She was important to him.

Roger told her understood and as much as he felt like his heart was broken he couldn’t make her care about him. He knew the only way to get over her was to move forward. Roger reached out to his friend, Pedro.

He was a year behind him at the academy on Earth. Pedro had made him feel much better by listening and saying that he needed to get himself back out there.

Roger buried himself in his classes. He still kept his friendship with Gina but it didn’t seem the same. He caught her with a look on her face that she felt guilty she didn’t feel the same. He almost said something to her a couple times but he felt like it would only make things worse. The irony of it all was that he found out he had been assigned to the same ship as Gina.

USS VALKYRIE

Roger was assigned to the engineering department in 2394 on the USS Valkyrie. He got all the grunt work but that was fine with him. He knew the new crew were given these tasks to watch their performance and willingness to follow orders. Roger had a whole lot of patience he would outlast them.

One of the things that bothers him was he felt like things weren’t quite finished between him and Gina. He knew he still had feelings for her but he wasn’t going to get over her unless he did something about it. The next time he saw her he asked her how she felt about him dating. Gina brushed it off like she didn’t care which was a green light for him. He had to resolve himself to the fact she wouldn’t feel the same.

Roger started dating Sandra Cross. She was a science officer who had been throwing hints at him. Roger liked her well enough. On their third date, they went to dinner and ran into Gina. Roger introduced her as his friend and the look Gina gave him confused him. She has made it clear she wasn’t interested and yet she didn’t seem happy to see him with Sandra.

Roger continued to date Sally. He didn’t have the same feelings for her that he had for Gina. He convinced himself that time together would help him fall for her. He just needed to be a little patient.

A month into their dating, Sandra broke things off with Roger. She told him she didn’t know why but he wasn’t giving their relationship one hundred percent. It felt to her that he was holding back and making no emotional commitment to them seeing each other. Roger apologized. He knew she was right, he couldn’t stop thinking about Gina. Roger didn’t know if he would ever get over Gina but until he did he wasn’t going to date anyone. It wouldn’t be fair to them.

Word got out quickly that Roger and Sandra had broken up. Roger didn’t know how Gina was going to react, he was shocked when she told him she had feelings for him. Roger asked her what she wanted from him. He was leery given it hadn’t been that long since she claimed she didn’t feel the same way he did. When Gina looked in his eyes and shared how she felt, Roger knew he could let her in. They have been dating ever since.

USS CHEYENNE

In 2396, Gina accepted a position on the USS Aikido, Roger supported Gina's decision to transfer ships to advance her career. He knew how driven she was and this was important to her. If they were meant to be and their love was real then they would make it.

Roger felt like he wasn’t moving up like he wanted to and he transferred to the USS Cheyenne. He had been promoted in rank to lieutenant junior grade but there was no room for advancement on the Valkyrie.

It was like a world of difference for him there. The chief and his assistant were glad to have him and they put him on the schedule. He was on beta shift and given a list of maintenance assignments. Roger was feeling better about his career.

Roger sent messages and called Gina as much as he could and she did the same. They missed each other but it made both of them feel better that Thai was working for them. It helped that they didn’t plan for it to be for a long time. They would find a way to serve together.

Roger made food friends on the Cheyenne and turned some heads at his calm nature, especially at a critical time when they were having engine trouble. He jumped right in and by the time the chief arrived Roger had fixed the leak.

Roger took some teasing from his fellow crew mates. He talked about Gina, how proud he was of her and that he knew she was going to go far. He couldn’t help but brag about her. It was his way of getting through being lonely. He missed her, which was normal. Work helped and he kept himself busy.

USS OKINAWA

Roger was promoted to Assistant Chief Engineer and transferred to the USS Okinawa in 2398. He was happy in so many ways. He had been promoted to the assistant chief position and the ship he was transferred to was the same one Gina was going to be on. He didn’t believe in fate, things happened for a reason and they were supposed to be here together.

Roger had had a ring for months. He wanted to ask Gina but he was nervous. It hadn’t been easy to get her to date him, he had to let her discover it for herself. Roger wasn’t one to procrastinate, he finally just came out and asked her. Gina said yes and they were married right away. Neither of them wanted to wait.

In 2399 they had their first child. Roger had never experienced anything as emotionally moving as watching Gina give birth to their child, a product of their love for one another. He doubted anything could make him happier. Roger knew that Gina had been nervous that being pregnant had put a strain on her career. She was concerned about having a second one. She felt like it might get her passed over for promotion and to become a CAG. He told her that others had families and were still successful in their careers.

In 2400, Gina was pregnant with their second child. Roger knew she was happy about the baby but they were going to wait for her promotion to CAG. He did all he could to assure her that she would have her dream position.

In the middle of her pregnancy, Gina was transferred back to Aikido with a promotion despite her pregnancy. Roger had checked into it and there were no positions available for him to transfer there to be with Gina. It was a hard time in his career. He knew Gina was working hard and trying to take care of their child as well as carrying their second. He would always be grateful to his command officers for giving him leave to be there when she gave birth to their second child. They hired a nanny and Roger returned to his ship, missing them more than ever. He came close to giving it all up. His family was more important but Gina convinced him that it wouldn’t be like this forever.

USS ATLANTIS

In 2402, Roger was transferred to the USS Atlantis. Gina had been transferred there as well. This was the first time he had seen his children in two years. He felt like a stranger to them. They were shy at first, even though they had video chatted, they were unsure of him at first. It killed him inside that he had missed so much. Their first tooth, their first step, when they said their first words. He knew there had been no other way, he had chosen to stay with Starfleet and he had to accept that he missed all these things because of choices he had made.

Roger continued to do well in engineering. He was a full lieutenant and on track to become a department chief. Roger worked hard in engineering. He liked the work and they had an excellent crew. Outside of work, Roger spent time getting to know his children and supporting Gina. He listened to her frustrations and was simply there for her whenever she needed him to be. Roger knew what it was like to be without his family and he wanted to be there for them.

Roger was both nervous and proud that Gina was gaining the attention of the Admiralty. She told him in 2403 the fleet had tried to offer her a different assignment but there was another offer for her to consider. The excitement on Gina’s face made all their sacrifices worth it. Roger had concerns for the future. He didn’t want to be separated again but he knew that his wife would not stand for him to pass up a promotion to chief. He knew things would come to the point of choices, he just wasn’t certain how that would play out. Roger would continue to support Gina and he would do what he felt was right for his career and the family. He knew a time would come where he would talk to Gina about all of this but not while she was making her choice. He didn’t want to influence her decision.

When Gina told him she was going to the academy for XO training Roger was happy for her. It was a step closer to fulfilling her dreams. They decided that this time their children would stay with Roger so Gina can concentrate solely on her studies. Roger would have a nanny to care for the children when he was working.

Roger discovered what Gina went through balancing his work and taking care of their children. There were times he didn’t know how she did it, especially if one of the kids didn’t feel well. At the same time he was pushing for a chief position. He had done all the work but had been passed over twide. He didn’t let it get to him, he would be promoted.

USS VALKYRIE

In 2405, Roger was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and assigned to the USS Valkyrie as Chief Engineer and second officer. He was shocked. All this time of being denied and suddenly he is placed at the Fleet Yards, which coincidentally was where his family was going to be. He felt like he was a puppet in someone’s game and that didn’t sit well with him but we were going to let it go. He was finally progressing along in his career and he would be with his family.
